cane clearing & breaking out - 1st yield reduction

As the shoots of a vine grow not only on the pruned arches, but also in places that cost the vine unnecessary energy (e.g. along the "old" vine trunk), these unwanted shoots are removed (partly by machine, partly by hand) as well as weeds growing out of the ground (purely by machine). Intermediate shoots growing from the arches - known as stingy shoots - are also removed if they are long enough. This prevents excessive quantities of grapes from growing, which would have to be removed later anyway in order to improve quality.
Around the so-called "ice saints", the days around 15 May, we often face the last fears of frost: We try to counteract this on particularly tricky nights by lighting straw or paraffin lamps in the vineyard.
